Homebound: A Journey in Photography, a partnership between The Africa Institute, Sharjah Art Foundation, and Sharjah Museums Authority, is a two-part exhibition on the work and career of acclaimed artist and photographer Aida Muluneh. This show, which is part of The Africa Institute's Ethiopia season, is the first presentation of Muluneh’s work in Sharjah.

Muluneh's second section of the show, titled 'Addis Foto Fest: Nine Years Survey,' selectively recounts the evolution of the Addis Foto Fest (AFF), which she founded in 2010. AFF is a biennial event hosted in Addis Ababa and the region's first and only international photography festival.

"It was the first time Black photographers had been shown as part of the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition, which was a historic moment in terms of photography. By entering into a collaboration like this, everybody wins - the exhibition becomes much deeper and much richer, and the Nobel Peace Center gains by having a body of work that's much more representative and interesting, and of course the Ethiopian photographers also are included on a global platform that they might not otherwise have had." - Finbarr O'Reilly

  • At the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Addis Ababa, "AtWork Addis Ababa" brought together a group of young creative minds. The experience was carried out in collaboration with Aida Muluneh and her organisation DFA (Desta for Africa). The rigorous 5-day workshop (December 9-13) was brought to life by 21 architecture, photography, and visual arts students under the direction of Moleskine Foundations advisor Simon Njami. During the Addis Foto Fest, the notebooks were displayed at DinQ gallery from December 17-21, 2016.

The participants curated the show, which took place barely three days after the program ended. They developed the exhibition narrative, created the exhibition catalogue, categorized the paintings, and organized the show. The DinQ gallery space became a small home in itself, an intimate space that hosted various modest installations around each notebook. In addition to the workshop products, the participants displayed some of their personal artistic works ranging from paintings to photography.
